NEW YORK, NY (April 27, 2007) -- Autism Speaks, the largest non-profit organization dedicated to increasing awareness of autism and raising money to fund autism research, today debuted the re-design of its dynamic, top-ranked web site, www.autismspeaks.org. The re-launched site includes a new home page that spotlights more of the organization's expanding activities, while also serving as a nexus of autism news, information and services.
“The new autismspeaks.org is a powerful and user-friendly tool for anyone seeking more information about autism and Autism Speaks' ongoing awareness, fundraising and research efforts,” said Alison Singer, Autism Speaks Executive Vice President of Communications and Awareness. “We hope that members of the autism community will consider this their home and their homepage, a place where they can quickly connect to news, services – and each other.”
Among the key home page enhancements:
- Increased space for news updates, to reflect an expanded range of activities following Autism Speaks' recent merger with Cure Autism Now, which brought together the nation's two leading advocacy organizations;
- Easier navigational access to the organization's central efforts in scientific research, community services and walk fundraisers;
- Greater promotion of high-profile content, such as the award-winning Autism Every Day video documentary, the newly updated Learn the Signs Ad Council public service campaign, and a soon-to-launch autism video glossary;
- A prominent sign-up link for e-speaks, Autism Speaks' weekly email newsletter.
Among the additional enhancements found throughout the web site:
- The Family Services Database, a powerful new feature for caregivers dealing with the challenges of autism. The database, with its thousands of entries, allows users to search all 50 states on a local or regional basis to find a wide variety of service providers and other critical resources;
- New content areas to be rolled out in the coming months, including expanded science and government affairs sections, a broadened community area -- featuring online forums -- a new chapters initiative, and a Navigating the Spectrum guide to the range of autism spectrum disorders.
The Autism Speaks website was designed by Managing Director Ross Cooper and Executive Creative Director Angela Vecchio of Gold N Fish Marketing of Armonk, NY, with web consultant Adam Glenn; the same team responsible for the previous re-design in Fall 2005 (read more). Andrew Leonard is Autism Speaks' Manager of Web Content and Kevin Berk is Director of Interactive Services.
Autism is a complex brain disorder that inhibits a person's ability to communicate and develop social relationships, and is often accompanied by extreme behavioral challenges. Autism Spectrum Disorders are diagnosed in one in 150 children in the United States, affecting four times as many boys as girls. The diagnosis of autism has increased tenfold in the last decade. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have called autism a national public health crisis whose cause and cure remain unknown.
