40,000 Parents Strong & Growing

This blog post is by Eric Peacock, MyAutismTeam

Two years ago I met with the folks at Autism Speaks and told them we’d like to create a social network just for parents of kids on the autism spectrum.  They said, “How fast can you move and how can we help?”  Well, as Autism Awareness month approaches for the second time since launching MyAutismTeam, it’s amazing to look back at the past 18 months and see how quickly the supportive and engaged community of parents on MyAutismTeam has grown. We first launched in June 2011 with just 30 parents from the Bay Area and today we have more than 40,000 parents on MyAutismTeam from all across the United States and Canada!   You can find, connect with, and learn from parents just like you no matter where you live or what your child’s specific development needs may be.

We’re proud of this growth but recognize we still have a long way to go.  (After all, there are another 1.5 million+ parents out there who haven’t yet heard of MyAutismTeam.)  In addition to word-of-mouth referrals from the parent community, a large part of MyAutismTeam’s growth can be attributed to the great partnerships we have with organizations like Autism Speaks. As the official social network and family resources guide for Autism Speaks, we wanted to make sure our community is aware of all the great services and tools that Autism Speaks offers to families.   We recently made it easy for parents to show their support of the partner organizations that have helped them on their journey with autism.  As you can see from the picture below, hundreds of parents have already showed their support of Autism Speaks.

The rapid adoption of the MyAutismTeam community also signifies the continued support that is needed for parents and families with children with autism. As parents prepare their children to thrive and develop in their communities, they need support and resources for themselves and their children, as well as resources and education for those who are not familiar with autism.

On April 2 – World Autism Awareness Day - we’ll be partnering with Autism Speaks to spread autism awareness and communicate the resources that are available for families with children with autism.  I’ve included a snap shot below of how our parents showed their support last year for Light It Up Blue and we are looking forward to an even bigger outpouring of support for Autism Awareness all next month.  In addition, we are going to be on the ‘Today’ Show with Hoda and Kathie Lee on April 2!  Be sure to tune in and please show your support for Light it Up Blue in your community and on!
