Autism Safety Kit

Use the printable forms and handouts in our Autism Safety Kit to develop a multifaceted safety plan specific to a person with autism's unique needs. Remember, a person with autism's safety needs can change as they get older or when there is a sudden change in routine, so the safety plan should be updated on a regular basis. 

It is important for the safety plan to cover all areas of the person with autism's life including home, school, and any community activities. Inform all teachers, caregivers, and trusted community members about the safety plan. Many families share the forms with their local first responders. 

Note: The contents of this kit were created to help families prevent and respond to wandering incidents involving children and adults with autism, but many can be used for all safety-related purposes.

• Safety & Wandering Prevention Checklist  Help keep your loved with autism safe by considering these action items for safety in the home and out in the community.
• Family Wandering Emergency Plan Make sure your family has a plan in case of a wandering emergency. Includes section with critical information, emergency steps, locations to search, emergency contacts and more.
• Autism Elopement Alert Form Fill out this form with person-specific information for first responders so they are prepared to search for your child in the event that he or she wanders from safety.
• Neighbor Alert Letter Provide this letter to trusted neighbors to inform them of your child's tendency to wander.
• Seven Steps to Prevent Wandering at Your Child's School These steps can help make sure protocols are in place so that your child stays safe at school.
• School Alert/IEP Letter A sample letter to your school about your child's tendency to wander.
• Teaching Safety FAQ Tips and strategies to help teach your child safety skills.
• Safety Log Keep track of wandering incidents, attempts or interactions that put your child at risk.
• Wandering Tips for First Responders Share this with your local first responders so they can effectively respond to a wandering situation.
