The purpose of this tool kit is to provide information for use in tandem with parents/caregivers and schools to support students with autism so they can reach their full academic potential. The overarching goal is to increase autism awareness and acceptance in the school community. This tool kit includes:

  • An overview of autism
  • The rights of an autistic student
  • Strategies to promote academic and social success
  • Handouts for specific members of the School Community:
    • Administrators
    • Nurses
    • Security
    • Paraprofessionals
    • Bus drivers / Transportation supervisors
    • Physical education staff
    • Specialists: Music, Art, Tech

The information can be used for school staff training, when students with autism enroll in a new school and to advocate and problem-solve throughout the school year.

This tool kit is not intended to serve as or replace a curriculum for special education. Rather, special education and administration staff may find it helpful as a supplemental resource to support students with autism in general education environments and involvement in the school community.
