IACC holds first full committee meeting with new members

November 19, 2015

On Tuesday a newly reconstituted Interagency Autism Coordinating Committee (IACC) met for the first time.  New and returning committee members included a new acting chair, Dr. Bruce Cuthbert, and Rob Ring, Chief Science Officer at Autism Speaks.

The IACC is an advisory committee that offers guidance to the HHS Secretary and works across federal agencies while coordinating with the autism community.

A highlight of the meeting was the announcement that Autism Speaks and the Simons Foundation have entered into an agreement with the National Institutes of Health to align Autism BrainNet and NeuroBioBank, two of the world’s largest repositories of donated postmortem brain tissue for medical research.  The partnership will produce a unified resource for neurological research by aligning the procedures that the two repositories use to collect, prepare and preserve the field’s most precious and limited resource – the human brain. The agreement will also establish shared standards and strict criteria that researchers must meet to obtain tissue from the two brain banks. Read more here.

Federal departments and agencies represented on the committee include several agencies within HHS: Administration for Children and Families, Administration for Community Living, Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, Food and Drug Administration, Health Resources and Services Administration, and National Institutes of Health; as well as Department of Education, Environmental Protection Agency, and Department of Defense .
