Since 2010, Autism Speaks has awarded over $600,000 in grants through our Autism Speaks Baker Summer Camp Scholarship Fund. For this year’s recipients – 113 camps across the country – we are starting to receive testimonials and video clips from the camps. This one is from Camp AuSome in Roanoke, VA. A local news crew visited the camp and filmed the kids having a blast, and below is a testimonial and picture from camper Cameron’s mom! I just wanted to drop you a quick note. I know that we really haven't ever talked much, but I wanted to take a minute and let you know just how much Autism Speaks scholarship's meant to our son Cameron and to our entire family (I am crying while I write this). We would have NEVER been able to afford to send Cameron to a camp like this. It's not that we didn't want to, we just barely make it by on a week to week basis. The scholarship that Autism Speaks provided has made it possible and was the only way for him to take part in this year's Camp AuSome. The joy that Cameron has had this week has been immeasurable, being with other kids like him, learning social skills, learning coping skills, fishing, swimming, horseback riding. He says that it's been the best week ever! It has been an absolute blessing to us all. The staff at the camp has been wonderful, Shelley, all the BCBA's, and Amy Trail who has been a godsend (like always as she is even transporting Cam as I have a broken ankle and can't drive). Please know that the scholarship that was provided to Cameron is helping change his life and giving him tools to become the best Cameron that he can be! I guess I am rambling at this point but, I just wanted to share with you just how much this opportunity has meant to us. Please feel free to share this with anyone and everyone with Autism Speaks because you guys ROCK! Oh, and I would be more than happy to volunteer my time to show everyone that Autism Speaks has made a BIG difference in our life! Thanks again!
