Mary MacCracken, Writer, Teacher and Disability Advocate, Passes Away

August 14, 2014

(August 14, 2014) -- Mary MacCracken passed away due to complications of melanoma at the age of 88 on July 23 in Hanover, NH. MacCracken was known for her innovative approaches to teaching students with cognitive disabilities. She started her work in the special education field in the late 1960's as a once-a-week volunteer and later wrote several memoirs and books about her work that attracted the interest of several television producers.

Autism Speaks Names Dr. Stephen Scherer Director of AUT10K

Scherer will head the world’s largest database of complete genomic information on individuals with ASD and their families.

Toronto, Ontario (August 14, 2014) – Autism Speaks, the world’s leading autism science and advocacy organization, has named renowned Canadian geneticist Stephen Scherer, Ph.D., D.Sc., FRSC, as director of the Autism Speaks Ten Thousand Genomes Program (AUT10K), a collaborative to develop the world’s largest database of complete genomic information on individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and their family members.

Ohio State University Opens New Transition Program

(August 12, 2014) - The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center is opening the Center for Autism Services and Transition (CAST), a new program to help young adults with autism gain independence on their transition to adulthood. According to OSU, CAST is one of only a few clinics in the country to provide care coordination and primary and specialty care services for adults with ASD.

Should Students Disclose their Autism Diagnosis in College?

(August 11, 2014) – The Age, an independent newspaper from Australia, came out with an article yesterday on a debated topic in the autism community about whether a student with autism in a postsecondary program should disclose his or her autism diagnosis. The article features the story of Penny Robinson, a student with autism from Monash University in Australia who disclosed her diagnosis of Asperger syndrome to her teachers and peers.

Yankees Host Autism Awareness Game

(August 9, 2014) - The New York Yankees hosted Autism Awareness Day at Yankee Stadium. For this game, the Yankees offered a special half-price ticket offer to members of the Autism Speaks community.  The day started with a pre-game ceremony which honored long-standing Autism Speaks supporters and big-time Yankees fans, the Mojica family.
