(April 21, 2014) -- Southwestern Illinois’s Belleville School District is making a positive impact on the lives of their students with autism. Chris Gibson, the district’s autism consultant, reached out to the district’s administrators with the hope of launching a first-of-its-kind mentorship program in the area. Once approved, the pilot program was implemented at Douglas and Central Junior High in Belleville where students with autism are mentoring several of their classmates with autism.

New experiences, including medical visits, can be difficult for individuals with autism. A trip to the optometrist’s office for a vision exam is one type of medical visit that can be challenging because an eye exam may be upsetting for patients who are over-reactive to sensory input. Because exams are done infrequently, desensitization through repetitive visits does not usually occur.

Autism Speaks Autism Treatment Network (AS-ATN) is pleased to announce the release of its latest resource for families from the ATN/AIR-P: a video and accompanying social narrative to help prepare individuals with autism for visits to the eye doctor, which can often be very difficult and uncomfortable experiences.
