NEW YORK, NY (May 6, 2010) -- Autism Speaks yesterday joined New Hampshire families, the New Hampshire Council on Autism Spectrum Disorders, the Autism Society of New Hampshire, and other autism advocacy organizations in applauding the members of the State Senate for their passage of House Bill 569, also known as Connor’s Law, which requires insurance companies to provide coverage of evidence-based, medically necessary autism therapies, such as applied behavior analysis (ABA) therapy. The House passed HB 569 last January.

NEW YORK, NY (April 30, 2010) -- Autism Speaks joined Iowa families and other autism advocacy organizations in applauding Governor Chet Culver yesterday for signing the Standing Appropriations Bill, HF 2531, which includes an amendment requiring the state health insurance plan to provide coverage of evidence-based, medically necessary autism therapies, such as applied behavior analysis, for state employees.

(April 29, 2010) -- This week, Autism Speaks Senior Policy Advisor and Counsel, Lorri Unumb, was interviewed by Stan Goldberg for his webcast Senior Dad: Autism Briefing Room. The interview focused on the issue of national autism insurance reform, but also touched on other policy issues affecting the autism community, including IDEA and the history of mental health parity law.

LANSING, MI (April 27, 2010) – Looking to assess the needs of thousands of Michigan families struggling with autism, a bipartisan legislative task force will hold hearings across this state this spring to learn more about the fastest-growing developmental disability in the country. More than 1.5 million people nationally have autism, including more than 15,000 children in Michigan.

NEW YORK, NY (April 8, 2010) – Autism Speaks, the nation’s largest autism advocacy organization, today joined with Delaware families, Autism Delaware, and other autism advocacy organizations to announce its support for Senate Bill 204, the autism insurance reform bill. The legislation would require private health insurance companies to cover the screening, diagnosis, testing and treatment of autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
