Autism Resource Center Offers Surfing Lessons

The Nantucket Autism Speaks Resource Center invites children with special needs and their siblings to sign up for surfing lessons with Nantucket sUrfari. The lessons are offered on Sundays July 13th and July 27th, August 10th and August 24th, from 9-10:30AM at Lady's Beach for a reduced fee of $25 per child, per lesson. The cost is normally $45-$65 per child, per lesson, and space is limited, so please register soon at khoryn@autismspeaks.org, or 646-341-3043.

According to Nicole Del Rosario of Nantucket sUrfari, "It's so uplifting to see kids beaming when they get up on a board, this has been especially rewarding for our instructors."

The surfing lessons are one of several activities the Nantucket Autism Speaks Resource Center has planned this summer to provide opportunities for parents, families, and children to get together. Other activities have included movie outings, a family potluck picnic at the Boys & Girls Club, parent socials and Kids Comedy Night.

Kim Horyn, Director of the Nantucket Autism Speaks Resource Center, noted "Due to noise and stimulation and because our kids are often judged for their behavior, they often miss out on regular fun activities and we wanted to give them a variety of things to do with other families." Horyn added, "It can be isolating for families who have a child with special needs, and no one understands better than those who have walked in your shoes."
