Asperger's Syndrome Presentation

The Nantucket Autism Speaks Resource Center and the Asperger's Association of New England (AANE) will partner to provide two forums on Thursday, March 6th. Jean Stern, Director of Children's Services for the Aspergers Association of New England (AANE) wiII lead a workshop for Nantucket Public School special needs teachers and later speak to the community.

Stern will present to the special education staff an introductory course, “A View from Within,” which descibes how it feels to have Asperger's Syndrome. The workshop, which includes classroom strategies, is designed to help faculty members understand the social, behavior and academic needs of their students. Stern will then address parents on "How to Advocate for Your Child with Asperget's Syndrome" at 6:30 p.m. in the Nantucket High School's Large Group Instruction room. The presentation covers what Aspergers Syndrome is, what evaluations are needed, how to build an effective IEP (Individualized Education Plan) and how to work proactively with the school system.

The registration fee for parents is $15, which will cover part of Stern's expenses in coming to the island. The remainder will be paid byAutism Speaks. Stern, formerly a special education teacher, private educational consultant and trainer, has specialized in Asperger's Syndrome over the past 10 years. She has taught parents and teachers and consulted on program development in Massachusetts and Connecticut.
