State Directory: Transition to Adulthood
Becoming an adult is a process, often referred to as the transition to adulthood. For those with autism and related conditions, it is best managed with transition planning. All high school students with autism should transition plan. It is known to lead to better outcomes in adulthood.
Transition to adulthood covers:
- Employment
- Postsecondary education
- Housing
- Healthcare and graduating from the pediatrician
- Community living
- Learning to drive
- Voting
- Self-advocacy
- Financial planning
Those with an IEP must have a formal Transition Plan in place no later than age 16 as mandated by IDEA. Some states have lowered that to age 14 or freshman year of high school. Important to note is that autistic students without an IEP can even access some state transition services. For example, you only need a medical diagnosis of autism to be considered for pre-employment transition services (pre-ETS).
States offer different transition planning support based on available funding and resources. That means each state differs in what services are offered, how schools work with community agencies and who will be granted services. For example, states can prioritize students with the highest support needs to receive services over those with lower support needs. To help you navigate, we compiled a list of all transition planning related offices and general guidelines for every state.
