Earlier this month, the Department of Labor clarified the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) to include siblings among those eligible for job-protected leave. Previously sibling caregivers were not explicitly covered in the law, creating barriers for families working together to support loved-ones with disabilities.

In 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) into law. The intention of ESEA was to achieve “full educational opportunity” for all students. Today, as Congress considers reauthorizing the ESEA, the disability community has the opportunity to build on the progress made for students with disabilities.

According to the Social Security Administration, without congressional action the Social Security Disability Income (SSDI) trust fund will become insolvent in late 2016. Unless Congress acts, the SSDI trust fund will not be able to make 100% of payments to its beneficiaries and will only be able to cover roughly 81% of scheduled payments.
