Governor Pat McCrory was joined today by North Carolina autism advocates for an autism insurance bill-signing ceremony. Earlier this month, the North Carolina General Assembly approved legislation to require certain health plans to cover the screening, diagnosis and treatment of autism.

The Internal Revenue Service has held a public hearing on the proposed ABLE regulations. The hearing provided an opportunity for disability community advocates, college savings plan administrators, and others to meet with Treasury Department officials and present their views on the rules.

U.S. Reps. Chris Smith (R-NJ) and Mike Doyle (D-PA), co-chairs of the Congressional Autism Caucus, authored a bipartisan, multi-member letter last week urging the US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) to reconsider their draft recommendations on universal autism screenings.

The Michigan legislature has unanimously passed legislation that establishes an Achieving a Better Life Experience (ABLE) program for disability-related expenses in the state. The legislation now heads to Governor Rick Snyder for his signature.

The North Carolina General Assembly has approved legislation to require certain health plans to cover the screening, diagnosis and treatment of autism and now heads to Governor McCrory’s desk. S.676 was sponsored by Senators Tom Apodaca and Joyce Krawiec. When signed, the bill will become effective July 1, 2016.
