Three New ATN Tool Kits

June 21, 2012

Autism Speaks Autism Treatment Network (ATN) is pleased to announce the publication of three new tool kits for parents, available for free download on our website. They are:

* ATN/AIR-P Parent’s Guide to Applied Behavior Analysis

* ATN/AIR-P Introduction to Behavioral Health Treatments

* ATN/AIR-P Parent’s Guide to Toilet Training in Autism

All three tool kits are from the ATN, through its participation as the HRSA-funded Autism Intervention Research Network on Physical Health (AIR-P).

The three new kits add to the growing catalogue available on the “Tools You Can Use” page of the Autism Speaks website. Developed by ATN/AIR-P experts, this series features practical advice for parents and practitioners working with children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). It also includes titles on sleep, medicine for challenging behaviors, blood work, visual supports and dental visits.

“If your child with ASD presents with challenging behaviors or has difficulty acquiring new skills, know that you are not alone,” says Autism Speaks Vice President of Clinical Programs Clara Lajonchere, Ph.D. “The goal of these latest behavioral tool kits is to empower families with effective strategies to create positive behaviors and increase a child’s ability to participate in therapeutic programs and family life.” The goal, Dr. Lajonchere adds, is to improve quality of life for both children with autism and their families.”

Applied Behavior Analysis

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is an evidence-based behavioral therapy that forms the basis of many interventions for children and adults with ASD. The new ABA Tool Kit helps parents:

·       Understand the principles and goals of ABA

·       Identify a strong ABA program and instructor

·       Become active partners in their child’s ABA program

The tool kit also describes different types of ABA therapies and helps parents find appropriate services in their communities. (Also see our related blog, “Partnering with your ABA Instructor,” by tool kit co-author Dr. Erica Kovacs.)

Toilet Training Your Child with Autism

This new kit helps parents recognize, understand and address common toileting challenges experienced by children with ASD. These include physical and medical issues, language difficulties, awareness of body cues and fears. It provides step-by-step practical guidance. (Also see our related blog, “Help! My Kid Won’t Use a Public Restroom,” by tool kit co-author Dr. Terry Katz.)

An Introduction to Behavioral Health Treatments

This tool kit guides parents through in-home strategies for teaching and supporting their child’s positive behaviors and reducing behavior problems such as aggression. (See our related blog, “New Tool Kit Explains Behavioral Health Treatments,” by tool kit co-author Laura Srivorakiat.)

Look for more ATN tool kits in the coming months. As always, you’ll find them available for free download on the ATN’s “Tools You Can Use” page of this website.
