Manes and Motions -Therapeutic Riding Center

Hospital for Special Care

UPDATED: September 13, 2021

Our PATH International certified instructors and trained volunteers team with our gentle horses to build self-confidence and promote compassion through the horse and human connection. Through various equine-assisted activities we help reach you or your loved one’s individual goals and reinforce goals established by educators and therapists. Programs are completed in private, semi-private or group sessions.

Therapeutic Riding
This mounted (on the horse) program sessions may include exercises, horsemanship skill development, trail riding and games on horseback. An unmounted learning session is typically included each semester to incorporate horse care.

Unmounted Horsemanship Program
This is a skill based program that takes place on the ground (no riding). Sessions focus on learning safe horsemanship, building confidence and providing a positive learning experience. Our staff teaches horse communication, safe horse handling, and the basics of good care including grooming, first aid, and feeding.

Equine-Assisted Learning (EAL)
Experiential learning activities promote self-awareness, help develop life skills and build confidence. Activities may include reading non-verbal language, developing empathy, building trusting relationships, and developing critical thinking skills.

Horse Adventure! Summer Program
This four-morning session in August brings children with and without special needs together to promote acceptance of self and others, provide team-building experiences, and encourage self-expression while having fun learning to ride and care for horses. Previous riding experience is not required.

Family Corral
These one-hour sessions provide an opportunity for family members, adults and children 8 years and up, to spend some fun time together learning about horses and each other! All activities are unmounted, no riding. Cost: $25 per person (max four family members). Classes begin the week of January 11, 2021.

Compassionate Horsemanship
Join our gentle equine friends for these one-hour sessions to learn about horses and practice being mindful and compassionate. All activities are unmounted, no riding.
