Next time you visit Discovery Place Science and Discovery Place Kids-Huntersville ask for a ‘sensory backpack’ at Admissions. The sensory backpacks contain industry-approved tools, such as noise-cancelling headphones, sensory squish toys and a custom visual schedule using pictures and symbols to help children and their families make the most of their visit to the Museum. A family can lay out their whole visit using Velcro images of the different exhibition areas to help prepare their child for experiences including waiting in line, getting wet at the water table or hearing loud noises during a live show. Backpacks are a free resource provided on loan for guests by request. All items in the backpacks are vetted and approved by certified therapists and doctors who specialize in Autism Spectrum Disorder.
