AHRC NYC James P. Murphy Staten Island Preparatory School is a non-public Chapter 853 New York State Education (NYSED) approved private elementary school and an NYSED approved preschool program offering 2 preschool classes for students with disabilities (4410 program). We serve students diagnosed with autism between the ages of 3-13 but are also approved to educate students with learning disabilities, other health impairment, emotional disturbance, and or intellectual and developmental disabilities. Our school-age classroom ratios are 10:1:2 and 8:1:3, and our two preschool classroom ratios are 6:1:2 and 8:1:2.
All of the staff are appropriately certified and credentialed as per NYSED and the school will follow all of the regulations as set forth by NYSED and the Board of Regents. The school operates on a 10 month (180 days) and 30-day summer session school calendar. We offer all related services on site, including speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, and counseling. We have an on-site School Psychologist and Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) as part of our team who help oversee advanced behavioral interventions, modifications, and supports.
Educational programming is designed to address individual needs in high teacher to student ratio classrooms within large spacious classrooms. The instructional programming focuses on scaffolding, differentiated instruction, age-appropriate academics, language, effective communication, social/emotional skills, self-help, and daily living skills. We use Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) in combination with evidenced-based curricula in all core subject areas. We follow the New York State Education Learning Standards. Students are either assessed by the NYS Standard State Assessments or the NYS Alternative Assessments.
