Gathering Feedback on a Vaccination Social Story to Help Autistic Children and Their Caregivers

Participate in Research

Application Summary

Autistic children and their caregivers often find undergoing vaccination procedures challenging. A Social Story resource could be ideal for learning educational information about preparing for and coping with vaccination. This study developed a customizable/changeable Social Story that guides readers through the steps of a vaccination and how to cope. Overall, this study aims to gather two rounds of feedback from caregivers, children, and professionals. Feedback will inform changes to improve the resource before it is tested in a future study.  , Researchers are currently looking to hear feedback from autistic youth, autistic young adults, and caregivers.Participation would involve a brief screening phone call, reviewing the Social Story, and then completing an online survey (about 25 minutes or less) to provide feedback. An online interview can be requested instead of the survey if preferred. , You can participate individually or as a child or young adult and caregiver pair. At the end of the survey, you have the option to choose an autism-related organization for a $10 donation to be made to.

Study Inclusion Criteria

All participants must live in Canada and speak English well enough to complete a feedback survey. , Autistic youth must be between the ages of 7-18 and autistic young adults must be between 18-24 years. Autistic participants must have a diagnosis of autism from a healthcare professional. Caregivers must be 18+, self-identify as a primary caregiver of an individual who is 7-24 years old and diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder by a healthcare professional. , If an interview is chosen instead of the online survey, then participants must be able to join an audio-video conference meeting and be willing to keep their camera on for the meeting.
