Update on Autism Speaks diversity, equity, access and inclusion (DEAI) efforts - FY22 Q4

April 25, 2022

At Autism Speaks, we are working to achieve a world where all people with autism, across the spectrum and throughout the lifespan, can reach their full potential – inclusive of all abilities, ages, races, ethnicities, gender identities, sexual orientations, socioeconomic status, and belief systems.

With this in mind, we want to share an update on our diversity, equity, access and inclusion (DEAI) efforts for the fourth quarter (January 2022 – March 2022) of our 2021 – 2022 fiscal year. Recognizing that this important work will take time, we are committed to serving everyone with autism and their families by improving the representation of this diverse community in our content, expanding the reach of our resources and increasing inclusive practices in our workplace.

Please see below for our work underway to date:

Expand inclusion within marketing and storytelling:

  • Continued to audit our social media channels to ensure all posts are inclusive and diverse
  • Quarterly refresh of home page with new imagery to reflect diversity
  • Redesigned Autism Speaks career page to better represent our inclusive culture and employment practices
  • Announced new Autism Friendly Designation sites, including Snip-Its in 8 locations and Autism Speaks

Ensure resources are inclusive and accessible to underserved populations:

  • Created web page resources, support and access to the newly launched digital Caregiver Skills Training, a free program designed to help families, especially those from low-resource communities, learn the skills to support their child’s growth and development
  • Provided translated resources for outreach to the Spanish-speaking community during World Autism Month
  • Presented a live webinar by bilingual ART associates on new Spanish resources, ¡Únete a nosotros en un pequeño recorrido por nuestros recursos en español!, via our “Voces Latinas” Facebook page
    • Engaged 346 people with the post/event
    • 329 total views, reaching 10 percent of active members
  • Refreshed the Autism Speaks Blue Blessing Guide to assist faith-based communities in embracing people with autism, for inclusive language

Increase inclusive practices in the workplace

  • Autism Speaks completed organization-wide required employee training for recognition as an official Autism Friendly Designation environment
