Stars Turn Out for “Sounding the Alarm” Screening in NYC

Autism Speaks co-founders Bob and Suzanne Wright are joined by Jess Mojica, whose family is featured in "Sounding the Alarm."

NEW YORK (April 1, 2014) --Autism Speaks and The Paley Center for Media hosted the New York premiere screening of “Sounding the Alarm,” a Blockburger Productions, a documentary that provides a poignant look inside the lives of those touched by autism.

Now that one in every 68 children in the U.S. is affected by autism, the need for more services and support across the lifespan is even more crucial. The film profiles several families who share their struggles and triumphs living with autism. Children must attend countless therapy sessions, families are forced to move from state-to-state seeking insurance coverage for treatments, and others struggle with the insurmountable financial burdens of providing care for their loved ones. The film also highlight’s Katie Wright and her son Christian, the young man whose autism diagnosis eight years ago moved his grandparents, Suzanne and Bob Wright to establish Autism Speaks, the world’s foremost autism science and advocacy organization. 

NBC News’ Harry Smith moderated the post-film discussion with panelists Bob and Suzanne Wright, Autism Speaks Chief Science Officer Rob Ring, Autism Speaks President Liz Feld, “Sounding the Alarm" Director John Block and Jesse Mojica, whose family was also featured in the film. One of the loudest applauses from the crowd came after Mojica declared, “love is stronger than autism.”

Others in attendance included CNN President Jeff Zucker, author Ron Suskind and best-selling author Lihi Lapid who helped open the event by discussing her struggles and triumphs raising a daughter with autism.
