(June 19, 2014) - Autism Speaks is excited to announce the second round of recipients of the Swimming and Water Safety Scholarship Fund!
This quarter, 32 organizations providing swimming and water safety lessons to the autism community have been awarded funding of up to $2,000 each. This fund, announced in early 2014, selects eligible organizations and programs to identify qualified financially disadvantaged individuals with autism to participate in swimming and water safety lessons. Through the first round of this new scholarship fund, a total of $37,000 was awarded in May to 15 organizations.
"Swimming at the Y has been very rewarding for my son and our family," said the mother of a scholarship recipient at the Philadelphia Freedom Valley YMCA. "For Joe, it has allowed him to learn to swim at his own pace and in such a caring environment. It is so important for his own safety that he learns to swim. I read countless stories of children with autism drowning ... It is terrifying. I feel good knowing that Jake is being taught water safety and learning the foundations of swimming. We love that Joe is a part of this team. It is so much fun for us to cheer him on and see him make progress."
Applications from service providers for the Autism Speaks Swimming and Water Safety Scholarship Fund are accepted year round and funding is awarded on a quarterly basis. Learn more about the program and how to encourage your local organizations to apply here.
