Palm Beach Autism Documentary Screening

October 21, 2014

(October 21, 2014) - There are over 3,000 children in Palm Beach County Public Schools that are diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders. With the support of Palm Beach County School District ESE Director, Kevin McCormick, and a sponsorship from Florida Crystals, Autism Speaks has held two of three screenings in Palm Beach County Public Schools this month of the documentary “Sounding the Alarm.”

At John I. Leonard High School in Greenacres, Florida, the families were lively and had many questions about appropriate IEPs and healthcare, Autism Speaks’ expert panelists were on hand to answer these questions after the film. The event had over 45 minutes of questions and answers after the screening. Many families expressed gratitude to the work of Autism Speaks and the panelist of that evening. Joel Malkin of IHeartMedia, moderator of the evening, has an adult child with classic autism. Joel has since formed a walk team for IHeartMedia and is very passionate about supporting the mission of Autism Speaks.

At Glades Central Community High School, in Belle Glade, Florida, Autism Speaks staff was delighted to be joined by a group of youngsters who asked many questions about autism before the screening aired. Self-advocate Alonso Velazquez, a young adult with Asperger’s Syndrome attending Florida Atlantic University, was on hand to speak to the youngsters about life with autism. The moderator for the evening was TV host Carlos Mahecha. So moved by the film, Carlos offered to air portions of Sounding the Alarm after the screening.

We invite everyone to join us at our 3rd screening, at Jupiter High School on Thursday October 23rd at 6pm. For address and more information and to RSVP please call 561-465-0053 or e-mail palmbeach@autismspeaks.org.
