Our Community Says Goodbye to Avonte Oquendo

New York (January 25, 2014) – Guests arriving for the funeral that was held Saturday morning at St. Joseph’s Church in New York for Avonte Oquendo, the 14-year-old boy with autism who disappeared from his Long Island City school on October 4, 2013.

Avonte’s body was recovered in the East River in Queens late last week. On January 21st, DNA tests confirmed that the body did indeed belong to Avonte. Following the funeral today, the family held a repast in Queens at Astoria World Manor in Astoria, New York.

The cause of Avonte’s death has not yet been determined.
