The New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) has announced that they will Light It Up Blue with Autism Speaks throughout April in honor of Autism Awareness Month. The partnership between Autism Speaks and the NYC Department of Sanitation began in 2013. Chiefs Steven Costas, John Capo, Todd Kuznitz, George Best and Anthony Ardolino were instrumental in forming the partnership.
The DSNY had a team for the Staten Island Walk in 2013. The campaign became an agency-wide initiative in 2014 with the main focus being an Autism Awareness Month in April. Last year all 59 DSNY districts and all DSNY administrative offices participated and fundraised by selling puzzle pieces, bracelets, pins and snacks. Together they raised over $40,000 for Autism Speaks during the campaign, nearly doubling their original goal.
This year throughout April the DSNY has added another element to their campaign. They will outfit all 2,600 sanitation vehicles with Light It Up Blue posters - spreading autism awareness throughout NYC.
