Man Kicked out of College for Hugging a Student, Allowed Back

January 16, 2015

Brian Ferguson, a 20-year-old college student with autism from Waxahachie, Texas, was expelled from college last week for mistakenly hugging a woman and kissing her on the forehead. A week later however, thanks to the Waxahachie Independent School District, Ferguson is back in his special-needs classes at Navarro College.

Taylor Bruton, the woman whom Ferguson hugged and kissed, said of the incident in an NBC DFW exclusive, “I didn’t want him to get in trouble, special needs or not. I didn’t want anyone to get in trouble, not over a hug. And it was a peck (in reference to the kiss).” When they heard of the complaint from Burton, the school originally called the act an assault.

Now that the incident has been settled, Ferguson and Bruton got together on Wednesday at a Waxahachie park where they hugged and exchanged small gifts with one another. Bruton said, “You can give me a hug. It’s ok.”
