Katie Couric Highlights Connection Between Fragile X and Autism

January 14, 2015

On Yahoo News, Katie Couric interviewed Shari and Brian Silver about their son Justin, who has Fragile X Syndrome. Fragile X Syndrome is the most common inherited cause of intellectual disability.

After Justin was diagnosed, a family friend recommened the Silver family contact Dr. Randi Hagerman, the medical director of UC Davis Mind Institute and director of The Fragile X Research and Treatment Center. Dr. Hagerman told Katie, “Today, 2-6% of individuals with autism will end up with Fragile X Syndrome. However, 60% of those with Fragile X Syndrome will have an autism spectrum disorder.”

Shari told Katie, “Dr. Hagerman told us during our first meeting that he will be able to live independently with supports. I think that everyone has a talent, and I believe Justin has a talent and will find out what that is and we will help him bring out that talent for the rest of his life.”

Fragile X is the most common known cause of inherited cognitive impairment and the leading known genetic cause of autism.
