Last week, Autism Speaks released its latest tool kit from the Autism Treatment Network - Puberty and Adolescence Resource: A Guide for Parents of Adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorders. On Tuesday, Matt Asner sat down on Autism Live with Kameena Ballard-Dawkins, AS-ATN family representative at Children's Hospital of Los Angeles and mother of a 13-year-old daughter with autism.
Topics of this new tool kit include body changes, self-care and hygiene, public vs. private rules, staying safe from strangers, elopement, safety planning for increased aggression, internet safety and more. The kit also contains visual aids and scripts to help talk to children and teens with autism about issues related to puberty and sexuality.
"In this tool kit, there are no codes," Ballard-Dawkins told Asner. "Our kids are very literal thinkers, they need to hear the real words."
