The Golf Channel Takes In-Depth Look at Autism and Golf

April 24, 2014

In observance of Autism Awareness Month, The Golf Channel’s In Play with Jimmy Roberts aired a special feature on autism and golf.  Roberts profiled golf great Ernie Els and his wife Liezl. The Els established the charity, Els for Autism in 2009, in honor of their son Ben. The foundation plans to open The Else Center of Excellence in Florida in 2015, which will include an educational program for 300 students ages 3 to 21.

In the piece, Roberts also got to know high school sophomore Ricky Martin, a young man with autism who has a passion for golf. Ricky’s father, Tim Martin, says he doesn’t know where his son would be today if he hadn’t discovered the game of golf at age 12. Autism Speaks Assoc. Director of Research Michael Rosanoff offered insight into how an activity like golf could be beneficial for a person with autism. Watch the complete feature above.

Update 05.04.14: Ricky Martin scored his first hole-in-one this week!
