Girl's heartfelt message to her school: 'I have autism, I'm like you'

April 15, 2016

9-year-old Keira Meikus recently learned she has autism and has succeeded at educating her peers about her diagnosis through a school-wide video announcement.

"Good morning fellow WOLS students. April is Autism Awareness month," Meikus says in the school's video. "I have autism. I am like you. I go to school. I take tests. I watch TV. I like music and paying with my friends."

Meikas' mom, Sarah Charles, told ABC3340 that her daughter just learned what autism is last year. She decided to tell her friends about autism as part of Autism Awareness Month.

"So to be able to share that with her friends and learn with her friends as she goes along I think is incredible for all of them," Charles said.
