Hip hop artist J. Cole recently issued an apology to the autism community for offensive lyrics in the song "Jodeci Freestyle" by Drake and J. Cole. Yesterday, Drake issued an apology of his own, promising to remove the lyrics from the original song. On his blog he wrote: "I share responsibility and offer my sincerest apologies for the pain this has caused. Individuals with autism have brilliant and creative minds, and their gifts should not be disparaged or discounted."
The apologies follow an outcry by people with autism and their families, who have struggled for acceptance in the face of disparaging stereotypes about the disorder. We commend both artists for owning up to their mistake and removing the lyric, and we welcome their support of the one in 88 individuals affected by autism.
