A proud sponsor for the last decade, BOWA, a building company that designs homes in the DC area, hosted a reception on May 13th to mark the 15th anniversary of the upcoming Autism Speaks 4th of July 5k in Potomac, MD. The event brought together past participants and encouraged others to join the effort this year by either serving as a sponsor or starting a team to raise funds and awareness for the cause on our nation’s birthday.
Steve Kirstien, an Autism Speaks National Capital Area board member and Principal Owner at BOWA, made the event possible. Steve first started the 5k team “Richie’s Racers” in 2005 in honor his son with autism. Richie’s Racers has raised over $160,000 to support the mission of Autism Speaks and BOWA is proud to, once again, be the Presenting Sponsor for 2015.
Along with Steve, many community members have been connected to this race from the beginning when it was launched in 2001 by Susan Pereles, Race Director, Autism Speaks staff member, and aunt of Shant, her nephew with autism. Raising $3 million since its inception, the 4th of July 5k in Potomac has raised more funds than any other 5k in Autism Speaks’ history. The race attracts a crowd of 2,000 each year and the organization is looking forward to toeing the line on the 4th to make the 15th anniversary the most memorable race yet.
Want to register? Last year 250 people joined virtually and ran, biked, swam, hiked or walked their 5K all over the world. Consider doing the same if you can’t be with us this year in Maryland on July 4th”.
