On Sunday, October 26th, Chicago’s Blue Man Group and Autism Speaks partnered for the first time to provide individuals with autism a slightly modified version of the Blue Man Group Show. Families came out and created memories that will last a lifetime.
The accommodations made included reducing sound levels at select moments throughout the performance. The theater provided noise canceling headphones upon request and created a calming environment in their lobby with bean bags, dim lights and quiet areas for anyone seeking a sensory break from the show. Autism Speaks staff and volunteers created customized social stories along with a program informing families of the accommodations.
Families, guests, and staff alike were moved by the efforts of the Blue Man Group. Though a show of this nature can be overwhelming due to sensory concerns, the help of the production staff made it possible, welcoming, and enjoyable for all of the families that attended.
Several families drove a distance to attend the special performance. One family drove from Michigan and another from Iowa for the experience and had a wonderful time. The event was very well attended and near capacity. CBS Chicago aired a segment and local newspapers covered the show.
Thank you BLUE MAN GROUP! We cannot wait for next year!
