(July 19, 2014) -- Autism Speaks Vice President of State Government Affairs Lorri Unumb debated North Carolina autism insurance reform tonight on WRAL-TV's "On The Record" with Michelle Douglas, a spokeswoman for Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) of North Carolina. Hosted by David Crabtree with WRAL Capitol Bureau Chief Laura Leslie, the segment focused on coverage of applied behavior analysis (ABA).
Earlier this week Autism Speaks lanched newspaper advertisements countering misinformation circulated publicly and to the General Assembly by BCBS regarding autism coverage and ABA. In addition, Autism Speaks President Liz Feld presented an open letter to BCBS urging the insurance giant to drop its opposition to the bill.
The North Carolina House twice in two years has passed reform bills, but the Senate has refused to take up the issue. The Autism Speaks ads lay out the same medical and economic facts of ABA that have convinced lawmakers in 37 other states to enact autism insurance reform laws.
