(July 29, 2014) - At Blue Star Recyclers in Colorado Springs, they’ve turned people's trash into opportunity. The non-profit hires adults with autism and other developmental disabilities to take apart unwanted electronics so they can be recycled.
The organization was started six years ago and since then, productivity has increased 30 percent per year. Blue Star has 25 employees, 17 of which live with a disability and 9 employees are on the autism spectrum.
Leigh Schilling is a model employee who always meets her daily goals. Her record is taking apart 175 hard drives in one day. Watch her story in the 9 News video above.
