“In this brave new world, we need to see college as a possibility for our loved ones on the spectrum.”
This is the main message of Autism Speaks Staffer Kerry Magro’s TEDx Talk titled “The Will of Opportunity: The Path of Autism to College.” In the video above, Kerry talks about his early struggles, being nonverbal till he was two and a half and the obstacles he had to overcome to get to College.
“When I was applying for College, I applied to 15 different schools because I knew I needed to get in somewhere.” Magro said. “When the letters started coming in, I found out that I not only got accepted, but I got accepted into all 15 schools I applied too. My dream of going to college had become a reality.”
Now today at 27-years-old Magro travels the world as an accredited national motivational speaker and a best-selling author who’s next book will be coming out on August 21st discussing the successes and challenges for those with autism in pursuing a post-secondary program. Magro who came out about having autism for the first time to his peers as a freshman in College hopes to now get the opportunity to share his story to post-secondary programs worldwide. Magro will be the Keynote Speaker on April 9th at St. John’s University for their Light It Up Blue Extravaganza to shine a light on the 70 million individuals worldwide who have autism.
Magro concluded, “Autism hasn’t defined us but we are now defining autism in college…”
