(October 5, 2014) -- An estimated 600 walkers participated in the 8th annual Nebraska Walk Now for Autism Speaks on Sunday, October 5th, at Haymarket Park in Lincoln. The weather was sunny and cool as over 60 walk teams gathered to enjoy food and refreshments generously donated by AquaSystems, Farmland Foods, Rotella's, and Subway.
After visiting the registration table and Autism Votes booth, teams were led through the community resource fair comprised of seventeen local service providers including: Arc of Nebraska, Arc of Lincoln, Swimtastic Swim School, Autism Action Partnership, Communications Steps, Autism Family Network, Munroe Meyer Institute, Handprints and Footsteps, Behaven Kids and many more!
The opening ceremonies, emceed by local 10/11 news anchors, Jon and Taryn Vanderford, began with a huge thank you to national sponsors: Toys 'R Us and Babies 'R Us as well as local sponsors: Runza, American National Bank, Gene Steffy Chrysler, St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Behavioral Pediatric and Family Therapy, and Stones Worth Stepping. The top two fundraising teams, Alpha Xi Delta- University of Nebraska- Lincoln and SubwayLincoln were recognized on-stage for their incredible fundraising efforts throughout 2014. Following the award presentations, Lincoln East High School Band led the walkers in the National Anthem and kicked off the walk around the stadium.
To date, the event has raised more than $60,000 in support of Autism Speaks' mission to fund research, increase awareness and family services and advocate for individuals with autism and their families. The weather was perfect and the day couldn't have been better! Thank you to walk chair, Vicki Depenbusch, and the Nebraska walk committee for another job well done!
