“Rising Pride”: TED Talk on Employing Adults with Autism

March 11, 2014

Since launching in April of 2013, Rising Tide Car Wash has quickly made a name for itself in South Florida and beyond as a social enterprise that employs – and empowers – adults with autism. Entrepreneurs John and Thomas D’Eri have created a supportive environment where John’s son and Thomas’ brother, Andrew, and others on the specturm can thrive as fully employed adults and achieve independence.

In this video, John and Thomas share the story of Rising Tide at TEDxCoconutGrove, an entity of the national TED program that engages communities to discuss world-changing ideas. As a result of this TEDx talk, Rising Tide was awarded the organization’s annual Hope Prize.

Rising Tide Car Wash was featured as part of the Autism Speaks initiative, Advancing the Role and Impact of Small Businesses in Employing Adults with Autism, which included a series of town hall meetings in nine cities across the country in 2013. It was also highlighted in the documentary, "Sounding the Alarm" which featured Autism Speaks Co-founders Bob and Suzanne Wright.

Rising Tide has also been nominated for CareerSource Broward’s Connections 2014 Small Business of the Year Award, and has been invited to attend this year’s Unreasonable Institute Global program, a prestigious social impact accelerator program. The program “is dedicated to tackling the world’s biggest problems by giving an ‘unfair advantage’ to entrepreneurs creating solutions to the world’s biggest social and environmental problems.”
