Autism Speaks Night at Nantucket Comedy Festival's Kids Show
The Nantucket Comedy Festival is dedicating Thursday, July 31st as Autism Speaks Night during the Kids Comedy Show, 5:30pm in the back lot of the Dreamland Theater. Following the Kids Comedy Show, which is sponsored by the Nantucket Golf Foundation, the Nantucket Autism Speaks Resource Center will provide an opportunity for members of the audience to meet Elijah Wapner, a member of the youth comedy troupe participating in the Kids Comedy Show. Wapner has Autism Spectrum Disorder.
Wapner, 17 years old and from Woodstock, NY, is also known as "Mr. Inevitable." He is featured in MTV's True Life, "I'm Autistic" and has produced a DVD and YouTube segment. Wapner does stand-up comedy and speaks to audiences about his autism.
Comedy Festival sponsors Kevin Flynn and Bonnie Block Levison reached out to the Nantucket Autism Speaks Resource Center to support families and individuals impacted by autism. Levison noted, "Autism Speaks does such important work, and we all know someone who is touched by autism, so we wanted to support the cause in some way." Flynn added, "We're proud to have Elijah in the show, and it just seemed like a natural fit to dedicate the night to Autism Speaks, especially with their Nantucket Walk for Autism coming up on August 16th.
Kim Horyn, Director of the Nantucket Autism Speaks Resource Center, noted, "We are so grateful for any opportunity to celebrate a young man's talents and strenghts, in spite of the many challenges of autism, and Elijah is a true inspiration for parents and children alike."
