This initiative seeks to provide training to respite care providers working with individuals with autism. A review of the literature on respite provision, as well as anecdotal reporting from families, has supported the notion that families experience a multitude of difficulties when trying to care for their loved ones with autism. Respite services are a much needed service, yet providers often do not have the background or training to interact effectively with individuals with autism and keep them safe during respite care. The purpose of this initiative is to provide respite providers with this training. Since respite is a critical service for families, it is essential that respite providers learn how autism impacts the individual in order to maximize the efficacy of the respite experience for the family.
