2012 Westchester/Fairfield Walk Now for Autism Speaks Recap

Thursday, June 7, 2012 View Comments

The 11th annual Westchester/Fairfield Walk Now for Autism Speaks was held on a beautiful Sunday on June 6th at the NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital – Westchester Division in White Plains, NY.   Our friends, family, therapists, sponsors and supporters, 15,000 strong, walked a two-mile loop and to date has raised more than $850,000 towards its $1.5 million goal!

The children’s entertainment area which featured inflatables, face painting and craft tables provided great fun for children of all ages.  We were fortunate to have 20 local autism resource providers join us in our service provider tents to provide autism information and resources to all of our participants.

Local Student Band “The Speakers” kicked off the start of our Walk day by performing several well known hits.  Our stage show was hosted by Danny Lyons of WEBE 101 and Jay Michaels of WFAS.  Several local politicians and performers provided a wonderful opening ceremony.  All of our participants enjoyed a special musical presentation from 6 year old You Tube sensation Ethan Walmark.  He performed on the piano, Elton John’s “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down” and Billy’s Joel’s Piano Man.  We also heard remarks from Dr. Herbert Pardes, NewYork-Presbyterian Board of Trustees Vice Chair, Harry and Laura Slatkin, Congresswoman Nita Lowey, Westchester County Deputy Executive Kevin Plunkett, White Plains Mayor Tom Roach, and Assemblyman Bob Castelli.  Debra Alt of Sam’s Dream Team sang the National Anthem prior to our official ribbon cutting ceremony.

Special thank you to our 2012 Westchester/Fairfield Walk Now for Autism Speaks Chair, Doris Perez and our Honorary Co-Chairs, Dr. Herbert Pardes and Harry and Laura Slatkin for their tireless efforts. A very special thanks to our sponsors:  Toys R’ Us and Babies R’ Us, The Leterman-Gortz Corporation, Gold N Fish Marketing, Curemark, NewYork – Presbyterian Hospital, Associated Benefit Consultants, Merrill Lynch, Ronsco, DC 9 New York District Council 9, Association of Concrete Contractors, The Berman Group, Cauldwell Wingate, Marjam, United Brotherhood of Carpenters & Joiners, Par Wall Finishing, The Martin Group, WC & C and our In Kind Sponsors: PepsiCo, PepsiCo Enable NY and Cherry Lawn Farms.
