Colorado joined together on Saturday, May 26th to celebrate the 8th annual Walk Now for Autism Speaks in Denver at Sports Authority Field at Mile High.
Walk Co-Chairs Gregg & Vicki Denhoffer and the entire Colorado Walk Now for Autism Speaks committee welcomed more than 4,000 participants on a sunny Saturday afternoon. More than 30 local autism service providers exhibited in the Resource Fair (sponsored by KeyBank) to share their information with the participants! Geoffrey from Toys“R”Us greeted the kids as did the Star Wars 501st legion volunteers. Opening ceremonies included remarks from several of our “Autism Superstars” including Payton & Brad McMorrough, Julian Wise Oaks, Vicki McDaniel, Braden, Andrew Lingenfelter and the women of Alpha Xi Delta. We were honored to hear from Honorary Walk Chair, top fundraiser and pioneer in the cause, Sallie Bernard as she spoke about her journey with autism and counted down for our walkers to begin. Our top fundraising team, “Team RDM” lead the walkers from the start line (sponsored by Precision Plumbing Heating & Air), around the stadium and then through the tunnel to walk the track around the Broncos field. Participants were able to view photos of previous Walks on the large screens inside the stadium as they finished their lap around the field.
Activities included bounce houses, face painting, a magician, kid-friendly activities, a fabulous “Kids Corner” sponsored for the 2nd year in a row by our friends at Solace Healthcare and entertainment provided by DJ Dwight Hauser from Dance Trax Entertainment with sound from Pure Energy Events.
Many new teams joined our veterans this year, helping us to raise more than $150,000.00 and extend the scope of our mission. We look forward to reaching out to all of our teams in the coming weeks to learn about their successes and to partner together on fundraising and awareness initiatives throughout the end of the year that will help us reach our goal of $200,000.
A very special thanks to our sponsors: Toys“R”Us & Babies“R”Us, Rothstein Kass, TD Ameritrade, KeyBank, Solace Healthcare and Precision Plumbing Heating & Air and the countless volunteers and committee members who so generously donated their time and talents to make the 2012 Walk a huge success!
