2011 Colorado Walk Now for Autism Speaks

Thursday, May 12, 2011 View Comments

2011 Colorado Walk Now for Autism Speaks participants were thrilled with the beautiful weather on May 7th as they came out to support the mission of Autism Speaks and change the future for those who struggle with autism!

Over 3,500 walkers joined at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City raising $26,000 on Walk day bringing our fundraising total to over $143,000.00! Participants were met with activities provided by our Resource Fair vendors along with bounce houses and a “Kids Korner” sponsored and staffed by Solace Healthcare!

Precision Plumbing and Heating cheered on our walkers at the Start/Finish line and walkers brought their signs and t-shirts supporting their loved ones with autism! A special thanks for the entertainment provided by the music and talents of Jeff Brinkman  as well as Tracy LaGuardia

We were also pleased to have Open Road Custom Photography on hand to take team pictures and the Police Department providing I.D. Kits to children and families.  We were excited to have Myles King (a 21 year old adult with autism) emcee our event where he brought enthusiasm and excitement to the crowd as well as a performance of his piano solo “Love, Happiness and Autism”!  The Mayor Pro Tem, Tracy Snyder, from Commerce City addressed the crowd with her support and encouragement of our walkers.  Kyle Cozard also gave a beautiful tribute to his mom and 2011 Walk Chair, Pam Cozard.

Our participants were then treated to introductions from some of our “Autism Superstars”, Tommy Upchurch, Keagan Wathen, Payton Reynolds, Braeden Craft, Tyler Rossi, Nick McMorrough, Rebecca Carr, Daniel Scherer, Andrew Lingenfelter and Braden Hendrickson.

We also recognized our national sponsors, Toys‘R'Us & Babies‘R'Us as well as our local sponsors, Financial Alignment Partners, Jeppesen, Sonic Drive In’s and our “Day of Event” sponsors: Solace Healthcare, Precision Plumbing & Heating and The Brain & Balance Center.  Before walkers began, participants were touched by the music of Tracy LaGuardia as she sang, “Let Me Be Your Voice”.

The crowd cheered as our Top Team, “Payton’s Peeps” began our 2 mile Walk! A huge thanks to Walk Chair – Pam Cozard and committee members Brenda Villella, Debbie Lingenfelter, Ginger Nichols and the entire planning and volunteer crew for all of their hard work!

They have truly put their heart and soul into making sure that families in Colorado have the support that they need to help us fulfill the mission of Autism Speaks. We are also excited to announce that Gregg & Vicki Denhoffer will be our Walk Co-Chair’s for 2012!

They are anxious to help continue the great work that Pam Cozard and her committee have been a part of!  If you are interested in participating in our planning committee, please contact Tricia Nelson at
