Calls to Action

Kerry's Korner

In this episode I feature our partnership with Build-A-Bear as we get ready to release our very first Autism Speaks Build-A-Bear on March 27th! To highlight the release we had a special sneak peak for several families at The Build-A-Bear Workshop in New York City. Each family got to participate in events which ended up with all of them leaving with their very own bear.

In this episode, I feature Joel Bethke who has Asperger Syndrome. Joel just started middle school last year and has dealt with bullying and taunting by his classmates. To help with this, Joel decided to write a paper about who he is to share with his school last November to come out about his diagnosis. Joel's paper is highlighted in the video and below:

In this episode, I feature Peyton, a 13 year old with autism who gives us a first look into one of his passions in playing the piano. Peyton will be playing the piano in an interactive dinner theater play called "Tony and Liz Tie The Knot" this September 21-30th in St. Louis! For more information on Peyton and the play please check out their website at http://www.TonyAndLizTieTheKnot.com!

Tune in tonight on the CBS Evening News between 5-6pm EST, 9pm EST on WLYN Channel 55, and on the CBS Morning News tomorrow (8/28) to see the Jaclyn Waiser's story!

Jaclyn Waiser, a 8 year old with autism, got the opportunity of a lifetime to perform at half-time in front of 80,000 people at MetLife Stadium with The Jets Junior Flight Crew Cheerleaders during a Giants vs. Jets Preseason Game.

In this episode, I feature Autism Self-Advocate/Celebrity Carly Fleischmann who has been in the news recently for being told on a flight back to her hometown to not use her iPad during takeoff. Carly is nonverbal and relies on her iPad to communicate which has led to a debate amongst the autism community when it comes to accommodations. I discuss this and why accommodations and acceptance are essential in the video here.

In this episode I feature Rapper 50 Cent's autism comments he made via his twitter and what it means now for our community. We have a huge community of potential advocates out there who can make a difference if we remember that there is strength in numbers. In this video I discuss this as well in more detail.

In this episode I feature Superbowl Champion Coach turned Championship NASCAR Team Owner in Joe Gibbs from Joe Gibbs Racing. Joe spoke at our "Autism Speaks Day at The Races" program before The FedEx 400 Benefiting Autism Speaks race. His speech is highlighted in this video.
