More than 400 Attend Inaugural Utah Walk Now for Autism Kick-off
Over 400 eager participants attended the Utah Walk Now for Autism kick-off on Friday, March 28 at the Hilton, Salt Lake City Center, laying the groundwork for a record-breaking first-year walk! The evening began with an information fair where guests could visit various booths for information about fundraising and recruitment, Autism Speaks' programs, funded researchers in the area, corporate partnerships, the puzzle piece point of sale program and more. Dinner was hosted by local talent Todd and Erin Collard of B98.7 FM., and Joseph Mason began the festivities with a moving performance of “Hey, Won't Somebody Come and Play?”
Three local autism heroes, Dr. David Sundwall, Executive Director of the Utah Department of Heath, Carmen B. Pingree, local autism advocate, and Cheryl Smith, President-Elect of the Autism Council of Utah, were honored at the dinner with the Utah Walk Now for Autism “Autism Angels” award for their tremendous contributions to the autism community. Co-Chairs Amanda and Phil Patten and Amy and Gary Baker and Recruitment Chairs Tricia and Jason Nelson shared a touching video about their experiences with receiving diagnoses, finding treatments, and why they Walk Now for Autism. The night wrapped up with an inspiring “Why We Walk” video where more than 30 families shared why they are committed to making the walk a success.
The Utah Walk Now for Autism will take place on Saturday, May 3 at Cottonwood High School in Murray, Utah and with over $95,800 raised, is well on its way to surpassing its first year goal!
