Carolinas Walk Now for Autism Raises over $450,000
Over 6,500 people enjoyed the Carolinas Walk Now for Autism at Lowe's Motor Speedway.
On Saturday, Oct. 4, over 6,500 people enjoyed the 6th annual Carolinas Walk Now for Autism at Lowe's Motor Speedway in Concord, N.C., representing a 44% increase in participation over 2007's event. The walkers, on more than 460 teams, raised over $450,000 – over $70,000 more than at last year's Walk.

and Chris Allen from Tanner in the Morning served as the event's emcees. Mrs. South Carolina 2008, Patti Mercer, shared her story as the mother of a child with autism. Prior to the Walk, Southern Junction performed the national anthem.
Walkers enjoyed a performance and autograph signing by the Charlotte Checkers Checkmates cheerleaders, meeting Toys”R”Us' Geoffrey the Giraffe and members of Team Aruba Drag Racing, and live music performed by Pilot Light.
The Walk hosted a resource fair, which showcased 30 companies and organizations, including ABC of NC Child Development Center, The ARC of Mecklenburg & Rowan County, Autism Society of North Carolina, Easter Seals, Miami Institute for Human Genetics, NC Council for Exceptional Children, TEACCH, UNC Chapel Hill - Research Registry and Vocational Rehabilitation.
A number of generous sponsors contributed to the success of the Carolinas Walk Now for Autism, including Hearst Corporation Service Center, SPX Corporation and Jersey Mike's Subs, which served as gold sponsors, and Bank of America, Grant Thornton, Moore & Van Allen, National Gypsum and Piedmont Natural Gas, which served as silver sponsors. WBTV, WFNZ and WSOC FM proudly served as media sponsors. Additional thanks to Jersey Mike's Subs, which not only supported the Walk with a financial sponsorship but also assisted with public relations and provided subs for all walkers.
