Busiest Spring Walk Weekend Raises Over $1.92 Million
On June 13 and 14, six Walk Now for Autism events took place in Colorado Springs, Hawaii, Iowa, Mount Laurel (Southern N.J.), Pittsburgh and New York City. More than 32,000 people participated, raising over $1.92 million.
On Saturday, June 13, 1,000 participants joined the inaugural Colorado Springs Walk Now for Autism at Cottonwood Creek Park, raising $45,000. Families enjoyed a free class taught by the U.S. Taekwondo Center, visits from the Denver Broncos mascot Miles and Toys”R”Us' Geoffrey the Giraffe, and spin art provided by Goodwill Industries of Colorado Springs. 1,500 people enjoyed a day at the beach at Magic Island at Ala Moana Beach Park in Honolulu for the seventh annual Hawaii Walk Now for Autism, which raised $82,000. This year, the Walk fell on the same day of the 93rd Annual King Kamehameha Day Parade, which participants could enjoy as they completed the Walk route. Prior to the eighth annual Iowa Walk Now for Autism, Iowa Walk Chairs Ethel Faust and Danielle Sharpe energized the 2,500 walkers by hosting a team t-shirt contest and distributing gifts during the opening ceremonies. Back on the east coast, 3,500 people gathered at Bishop's Gate Corporate Center in Mount Laurel, N.J. for the eighth annual Southern New Jersey Walk Now for Autism, raising $255,000. Children were entertained throughout the entire Walkday by a rock ‘n roll fitness show, clowns, face painters, and costumed characters. The Pittsburgh Walk Now for Autism celebrated its 10th anniversary, as 12,000 people walked at Heinz Field, raising $715,000. 28 teams in attendance have participated in the Walk since its inception in 2000. Walkers enjoyed beautiful weather, family entertainment and a resource fair with nearly 30 providers. On Sunday, June 14, 12,000 people walked at South Street Seaport for the fifth annual New York City Walk Now for Autism, raising over $700,000. Special guests in attendance included Gov. David Paterson (D-NY), honorary Walk Co-Chairs Dustin Keller of the N.Y. Jets, and Michael Boley of the N.Y. Giants and Toys”R'Us Geoffrey. All reported fundraising totals are "to-date" - teams are still raising money and the sites are still accepting donations. The next Walk Now for Autism events will be held on July 11 in Milwaukee and Tacoma.
