Once in a great while, a special person emerges in the history of science and medicine, whose unique set of characteristics shed light upon an entire disorder and sometimes even on entire systems of the human brain, such as language, communications and intentional behavior. Tito is such a person.
Tito, now 18, communicates eloquently through his writing and has gained national recognition for his poetry. He has published several books of his memoirs and poems, and plans to continue to pursue a career as a professional writer.
It is Tito's dream that one day we can live in a matured society where no one would be "normal" or "abnormal" but just human beings accepting each other. In his book, "Beyond the Silence," he so eloquently writes:
A world of such
Can't it be?
With acceptance and love
Not sympathy!
My story could touch
If your heart,
My "hope" would get
The precious reward!

Tito's first book, Beyond the Silence: My Life, the World, and Autism, was published in Great Britain by The National Autistic Society in 2000. The North American edition of his first book, was released in 2003 by Arcade Publishing, Inc. (New York) under the title The Mind Tree: A Miraculous Child Breaks the Silence of Autism. In his first book, Tito provides a fascinating, insightful account of how he experiences the world through his very unique sensory system. Tito expounds upon the universal topics of love, loneliness, frustration, pride and happiness, all of which he experiences fully in spite of his classically autistic behavior. But perhaps most impressive and moving are Tito's poems, written from an early age, many of which are included in his first book.
For parents, Tito's account of how his mother Soma taught him to read, write, think and communicate, will be of great interest and more can be learned about Soma by visiting her website: http://www.halo-soma.org/
Tito's second book, The Gold of the Sunbeams, a collection of his stories, was released in 2005, by Arcade, Publishing, Inc.
An interview with Tito appears in Douglas Biklen's book, Autism and the Myth of the Person Alone, (N.Y.U. Press). Biklen's book is a collection of interviews with autistic people whose testimony refutes the commonly held belief that autistics do not desire social-emotional connection with others.
