More than 1,500 People Join Penn State's "We Are … Curing Autism Now"
On an extremely frigid and windy Saturday morning, a 35 mph wind gusted straight through S. Allen Street, nearly uprooting a registration tent and knocking over tables and chairs. Within seconds, hoards of volunteers managed to place all the scattered pieces back together, recreating "a stable pillar of hope" which is how the State College community has come to view this event. The 4th annual Autism SpeaksU "We Are … Curing Autism Now" Penn State 5K Race/3K Walk, held on Saturday, April 4, hit several milestones this year. Within just four short years, the event has raised $600,000 for Autism Speaks, and with more than 1,500 participants, it was the largest event to date.
Beta Sigma Beta, Phi Beta Phi, and Sigma Delta Tau, three groups within the PSU Greek system, spearheaded this year's incredible effort by raising $30,000 and managing all logistical elements. As runners and walkers, friends and family, professors and students all lined up to enjoy the festivities and participate in the race/walk it was evident by the excitement in their faces and hope in their eyes that they knew why they were there, and by the proud looks of all the event organizers they knew as well…"We Are…Curing Autism Now".
Autism SpeaksU, an initiative of Autism Speaks, has used the successes at Penn State as a formula for college campuses throughout the U.S. During 2009, UConn, U of Md., and UMass have scheduled or have already implemented the vision of Autism SpeaksU, which is "to unite college communities across the nation into a single, powerful voice for the autism community."
