Penn State's "We Are … Curing Autism Now" Raises $120,000

On April 12, 2008 the 3rd annual “We Are … Curing Autism Now 5K Race/3K Walk” presented by Beta Sigma Beta, Pi Beta Phi and Sigma Delta Tau took center-stage in State College, Penn. A record breaking 1,600 participants raised over $120,000, bringing the event's three year total to $412,000.

With sunny blue skies marking an uncharacteristic spring day in State College, runners and walkers lined up eagerly anticipating the opportunity to run/walk for autism. The event attracted the attention of local news stations, newspapers, and radio stations. Penn State students and local residents showed tremendous unity through shouts of enthusiasm, and by showing off their decorative
event t-shirts. With the help of race marshals and the local police force, runners and walkers made their way through the streets of State College.

Following the race/walk, participants were awarded with food and beverages from local vendors, and participated in post race/walk activities. Hundreds of people watched as the fastest male and female runner were given their awards, and raffle ticket winners were announced.

This year's “We are … Curing Autism Now” had a great showing not only in its fundraising efforts, but in its vigorous campaign for awareness and support as well. With the 3rd annual event as fuel for the fire, the leadership committee is already making plans for the 4th annual “We Are … Curing Autism Now”.
